One of the delights of visiting London, whether on a holiday or as a day-tripper, is the huge choice of free FREE hunterian museum in londonmuseums on offer.  London’s free museums are a real treasure and a genuine draw for both international tourists and those who live close the city. Yes, they offer us an opportunity not only to save a few pounds on the prestigious museums that attracts thousands of visitors each day; but more importantly they allow us to be amazed at things we wouldn’t necessarily have otherwise seen.

Check out the Hunterian Museum, located in the Royal College of Surgeons.  John Hunter came  to London in 1748 at the age of 20 and worked as an assistant in the anatomy school of his elder brother William (1718-83), who was already an established physician and obstetrician. Under William’s direction, John learnt human anatomy and showed great aptitude in the dissection and preparation of specimens. William also arranged for him to study under the eminent surgeons William Cheselden (1688-1752) and Percivall Pott (1714-88).   Hunter is today remembered as a founder of `scientific surgery’. He was unique in seeking to provide an experimental basis to surgical practice, and his museum is a lasting record of his pioneering work.    The building itself is worth a look, but the sight of thousands of specimen jars, each containing different pickled body parts, is not something you see every day. There’s the skeleton of a giant, several exhibits telling the story of the many advances in surgical techniques, and most disturbing of all, several examples of a foetus, the latter ones being to all intents and purposes, a baby in a jar.  Enjoy the Free guided tour of the Hunterian Museum every Wednesday at 1pm.
